Understanding Hybrid Mattresses

Just as craftsmen meticulously choose their tools, we should not overlook the quality of the mattress that we sleep on. After all, this is an item we are going to use every day and has a big impact on our sleep and, furthermore, on our moods, capacity to focus, and on every little thing that takes energy to do.

When choosing the right type of mattress, you might get overwhelmed by the various types and materials. It’s important to consider a number of factors when doing so, like your most favorite sleeping position, how much you move during the night, and if there are other factors that might affect you (such as a sensibility to dust or even a high risk of mold development in your bedroom).

Hybrid mattresses can help you reduce a lot of fuss when searching for the ideal sleeping support, as it covers a lot of criteria that’s important when going mattress shopping. The term “hybrid” defines an object which is composed of two different materials: in this case we have a mattress that’s both a foam mattress and an innerspring one, offering you a variety of advantages.

People can have different sleeping preferences, for which certain types of mattresses match better to suit their needs. With hybrid mattresses, being a combination of two mattress categories, is much more likely to be suited to the tastes of two different partners, both of them with unique an individual sleeping habits.

Even if the materials can sometimes vary from one manufacturer to another, hybrid mattresses are typically divided into three main parts:

  • A base of steel coil system which gives the mattress its mobility, but also provides great support for your body. The system also helps in reducing the impact that your sleep partner’s movement during nighttime might have on you, as a light sleeping person might wake up if the partner moves a lot during sleep.
  • A comfort layer which is made out of foam (could be memory foam, latex, polyfoam, or another type of foam). Additionally, cooling materials and technologies are sometimes embedded in this layer as well. They play a big role in slowing heat transfer and assuring the mattresses doesn’t get hot up to a point where it becomes uncomfortable for you (this is an important factor if you know you have a higher nocturnal body temperature, or live in a hotter climate).

A pillow top to provide additional cushioning, which is generally made from foam, cotton, wool, or fiberfill.

The Benefits of Hybrid Mattresses

The idea of having a hybrid mattress already sounds like a good investment, but let’s dig deeper into the most important benefits that customers have recognized in this specific type of mattress:

  • Hybrid mattresses are generally matched with both side and back sleepers alike. If you oscillate between these two positions, that’s even better, because it satisfies your sleeping needs while most mattresses are only fit for one position.
  • Hybrid mattresses typically have comfort layers made with memory foam, which is known for its superior comfort level and the ability to take the shape of one’s body.
  • You’re getting the best of both worlds: As an innerspring mattress might be too uncomfortable or rigid for your body, and a memory foam mattress might make you feel like you’re “sinking in” or just doesn’t offer enough support, a hybrid mattress perfectly incorporates the positive aspects of these two types: enough support for your body, but also cradles your body, for superior comfort.
  • Hybrid mattresses are durable and often come with a warranty that covers extended periods of time, and a variety of different situations.
  • Issues that might come with having a memory foam mattress are solved with the hybrid model: there are less chances of you sweating and feeling hot during the night. That’s because the construction of a hybrid mattress is focused on breathability, amongst other things. Due to its coil bounciness, hybrid mattresses also make getting in and out of bed a whole lot easier.

Top 7 Hybrid Mattresses

Compared to a mattress that has layers made from a single material, hybrid mattresses offer lots of advantages, such as superior motion isolation, stronger edge support, and an average price point.  In the next part of this article, we wanted to show you out top seven hybrid mattress reviews, labeled so that you can find a model that’s suitable to your needs and sleeping habits.

Construction

The DreamCloud mattress is considered to be the best one of its category when it comes to hybrid mattress reviews.  The top cover is made with tufted cashmere, to ensure maximum breathability and luxurious softness.  Underneath the cover, we have a layer of gel-infused memory foam, for body contouring purposes.  Then, we find a layer of quilted memory foam, for better comfort and support.

The insertion of a natural latex layer gives the mattress a little bit of bounciness, and even more contouring.  Moving on, there is a supporting layer made from memory foam, plus one more layer made from super soft memory foam.  At the core of the mattress, we discover pocketed micro coils which bend underneath the pressure of your body, minimizing motion transfer.

The base of the mattress has a thin layer of high-density memory foam, to provide protection for the innerspring layer above it.

Firmness

On a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the firmest mattress available on the market, the DreamCloud mattress is rated at a 6.5, and is considered to be a medium-firm mattress in this hybrid mattress review.  For people of average weight, this is the most popular firmness level chosen.  The mattress offers superior body contouring, comfort and support, because of its intelligent construction that combines coils, memory foam and latex.

Feel

Every time you try to describe how a mattress feels, you need to take into consideration the several pressure points that are created in all sleeping positions.  Because of the many layers of memory foam, which are placed above the pocketed coil system, the DreamCloud mattress offers a great deal of support for back and stomach sleepers.  People who like to sleep on their sides will notice a little bit of pressure in the shoulder area, but it’s nothing that can really affect the quality of their sleep.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is a very important mattress feature for people who have a sleeping partner.  As far as the DreamCloud mattress is concerned, it does a pretty good job in isolating motion, although we have seen mattresses perform even better at this chapter. There aren’t many chances that you will be disturbed by your sleeping partner, even if they tend to move a lot at night.

Specs:

  • Firmness Rating: 6.5/10
  • Mattress Height: 15 inches

Pros

  • Great for combination sleepers.
  • Supportive enough to eliminate back pain.
  • Luxurious feel.
  • Convenient price.
  • Great for couples.
  • Intelligent construction.
  • Good bounciness level.

Cons

  • Heavy sleepers can sink in too deep.

Construction

In terms of hybrid mattress reviews, this one is high on the list. With a total mattress height of 11 inches, the Sapira mattress has a very interesting combination of materials, bringing together memory foam and innerspring technology.  The cover of the mattress is made from a combination of lycra and polyester, which gives the fabric a nice stretch. Lycra is also the material used to manufacture sporting apparel, due to its natural property of wicking away moisture.

Underneath the cover, there is a 1.5 inch layer of Aveenafoam. This particular layer has several holes in it, to maximize airflow and allow the skin to breathe. Then, we find another 1.5 inch layer, only this time it’s made from memory foam.

The transition layer of the mattress measures 1 inch in thickness, and is made with high-density poly foam. The support layer of the mattress is 6 inches thick, and made from individually wrapped coils. At the base of the mattress, Sapira comes with a 1 inch layer of poly foam.

Firmness

Talking about the firmness of a mattress is always a very subjective matter.  The Sapira mattress has a firmness level of about 6.5 or 7 out of a total 10.  That makes it a medium firm mattress, which is generally recommended for combination sleepers.

Feel

The firmness and feel of a mattress have always been closely related. Again, the way how a mattress feels is heavily dependent on your weight and your favourite sleeping position. When you lie on your back and stomach on this mattress, you will notice very little sinkage and a great deal of support.  However, sleeping on the side reveals a little bit of pressure in the shoulders and hip area. This is quite normal with a lot of mattresses and despite the formation of these pressure points, the Sapira does not feel uncomfortable as a hybrid mattress for side sleepers, either.

Motion Transfer

Motion isolation is very important for those of you that share a bed with a partner. The combination between memory foam and individually wrapped coils of this mattress, provide a great deal of stabilization, managing to prevent motion transfer from disturbing one of the partners when the other one is fussing, or getting in and out of bed.

Specs:

  • Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Firmness Rating: 7/10
  • Mattress Height: 11 inches

Pros

  • Great for couples.
  • Superior support for back and stomach sleepers.
  • Good motion isolation.
  • Minimal compression on the edges.

Cons

  • Single firmness option.

Construction:

The top cover of the mattress is made from a material that combines polyester and cotton.  This gives the mattress breathability, but that’s also due to the 1.5 inches of gel memory foam infusion. This makes the mattress soft, but also absorbs heat, to leave the sleeper feeling very comfortable.

The comfort layer of the mattress is made from 1.5 inches of convoluted foam. Because of the design of this layer, the egg-crate shape encourages airflow even further.  Underneath the comfort layer, we find 1.5 inches of foam that has a nice and pleasant bounce to it. It resembles latex quite a lot, and it gives a sleeper a lot of support.

The transition layer is made from 1 inch of polyfoam, meant to act as a bridge between the layers above and the pocketed coil system below. Speaking of pocketed coils, the 8 inch  system gives the mattress even more bounce, and provides  superior motion isolation.

Firmness:

By applying hand pressure on the surface of the mattress, you will feel how the memory foam layers have a pleasant level of sinkage.  Pushing even further, you will notice the latex-like foam responding to push your body back.  Overall, the Alexander Signature has a firmness rating of about 5.5, which makes it a medium firm mattress that falls on the softer side. However, the firmness of your Alexander Signature will depend on the option chosen out of the six ones available.

Feel:

Every time you read a review about the feel of a mattress, you need to consider that this is a very subjective topic.  As far as this particular mattress is concerned, you will notice a great deal of pressure relief if you are a back sleeper. The memory foam layers above do a great job in providing body contouring, but without letting the body sink into the mattress too deep.

Rolling on the side, you will notice that there is very little pressure felt in the hips and the shoulders, because the memory foam and pocketed coil system are really great at providing pressure relief.  Even if the mattress supports stomach sleepers as well, you will notice that your hips tend to sink into the bed a little bit too much.   This indicates that a firmer mattress would be a much better choice if you are a stomach sleeper.

Motion Transfer:

As we try to analyse the motion transfer of a mattress, we always keep in mind that the benchmark for this category is the memory foam mattress.  Foam is generally very good at minimizing motion transfer, but people also have high expectations when it comes to a mattress that has a pocketed coil system.  While the Alexander Signature mattress is good at isolating motion, it’s not the best mattress we’ve seen in this category.

That doesn’t mean that it can’t be used by people who sleep alone. If you’re looking for a hybrid mattress Twin-sized for your child’s room, this is also a viable option.

Specs:

  • Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, King Internal Split, Cal King Internal Split
  • Firmness Rating: 5.5/10
  • Mattress Height: 13.5 inches

Pros

  • Highly breathable.
  • Great pressure relief for back and side sleepers.
  • Made with high-quality foam.
  • Thermic Phase-Change Fabric.
  • Six firmness options available.

Cons

  • Not good for stomach sleepers.

Construction

The Avocado has one of the best hybrid mattress constructions we’ve ever seen.  You can tell that this is a high quality product from the minute you set your eyes on the cover. It is made with organic cotton and New Zealand wool, to give the sleeper superior softness and the peace of mind knowing that they are using a product made with natural materials.

The comfort layer of the mattress is made with Dunlop latex, which is a very bouncy material that prevents the sleeper from sinking into the mattress.  Latex also has naturally cooling properties and is capable of regulating the temperature of the mattress.

At the very heart of the mattress lies an 8 inch layer of pocketed coil systems.  Not only does this make the mattress bouncier, but it’s also divided into three zones that target the body parts that need very specific support.

Firmness

Avocado also sells a pillow top mattress option, which can make your bed softer by adding 2 more inches of latex on top.  If you buy this version of the Avocado mattress, you will notice that it has a firmness rating of about 6 or 6.5, on a scale from 1 to 10.

When you apply pressure on the bed, you can feel that the bouncy latex does not delay in responding.  Since the innerspring coil system is designed in such a way as to provide customized support for different body parts, it’s visible that your body sinks more or less in different zones of the mattress.  Overall, the Avocado Green is a medium firm mattress, but it will definitely feel firmer if you opt for the version without the pillow top.

Feel

The firmness of a mattress means nothing unless we discuss how it feels in different sleeping positions. The Avocado mattress will distribute your weight evenly on the entire surface of the bed if you are a back sleeper.

However, side sleepers will notice a little bit of pressure in the shoulders, but this is quite a common trait (unless the mattress is very soft).  As far as stomach sleepers are concerned, they will sense a great deal of pressure relief because the bed has a lot of latex in it.  The Avocado pushes the hips upwards and forces the spine to stay in the correct position.

Motion Transfer

Because of its high level of bounciness, the Avocado mattress is not perfect at isolating motion. However, unless you are a light sleeper, you should have no problems with your partner’s movements, as there is no ripple effect coming from the individually wrapped coils.

Specs:

  • Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Firmness Rating: 6.5/10 (with pillow top included)
  • Mattress Height: 12 inches

Pros

  • Made with quality Dunlop latex.
  • Naturally breathable.
  • Has a nice bounce.
  • Cover made with organic cotton.
  • Moisture-wicking New Zealand wool.

Cons

  • A little expensive.

Construction

Helix is one of the mattress brands the best understand its market.  Since they launched their online sleeping quiz, they have been able to match mattresses and sleepers in such a way as to provide maximum comfort and support, depending on the specific traits of every customer.  Helix Dusk is a hybrid mattress the combines some great materials and is also one of their best-selling models.

The cover of the mattress is stretchy and soft, and it’s meant to maximize breathability.  The comfort layer of the mattress is made with a latex-foam hybrid alternative, for body contouring and proper response.  High-grade polyfoam is used to make the transition layer, which can provide the sleeper with the best cushioning.

Underneath all of that is an individually-wrapped coil system which allows air to circulate inside the bed, but also limits motion transfer.  The base of the bed is made with DuraDense foam, which gives the mattress durability, but also supports the layers above it.

Firmness

The firmness level of the Helix mattress depends on the option you’re paired with after taking the sleeping quiz. As far as the Duck model is concerned, it has a firmness rating of 6 out of 10, which makes it a bit plushier compared to the industry standard for a medium firm mattress, which is a rating of 6.5.

Feel

Lying on your back on the Helix Dusk, you will feel that there is just enough support to contour your body, but also notice the exceptional support in the lumbar region.

Side sleepers won’t notice very much pressure in key points, but we would like to point out that a softer mattress might be a better option for those who primarily prefer this position. Same thing goes for stomach sleepers: the mattress is a little too soft to fully push your hips up and align their spine.

Motion Transfer

Overall, almost every model in the Helix line of mattress does a great job in isolating motion. As for the Helix Dusk, there is some great motion isolation here, as the layers of memory foam on the top of the mattress will only sink in under immediate pressure.

Specs:

  • Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Firmness Rating: 6/10
  • Mattress Height: 10 inches

Pros

  • Great motion isolation.
  • Temperature regulation features.
  • Removable and washable cover.
  • Good support for back sleepers.
  • Convenient price

Cons

  • Noticeable pressure points for side and stomach sleepers.

The Tomorrow mattress brings out the best of memory foam with the support provided by individually wrapped coils.  The top of the mattress hosts cooling open-cell memory foam, followed by pressure-relieving gel-swirl memory foam.

The transition layer of the mattress is made from dynamic response memory foam.  Underneath these three layers, we find an individual pocketed coil system, which has a lot of bounciness and provides great support for the sleeper.

In order to protect the pocketed coil layer and to give the mattress its shape, the bottom side is cushioned by a high-density memory foam base.

Firmness

Buyers have the option to choose between a medium soft and a medium firm version of this mattress.  If you often find yourself sleeping side would be best to choose the softer version. The firm one is more compatible for stomach and back sleepers. The plush version of the Tomorrow mattress has a firmness rating that varies between 3.5 and 4.5, while the firmer one is rated at about 6 to 6.5.

Feel

Because of its memory foam contouring and comfort layers, the Tomorrow Sleep mattress is great for people that want a hybrid, but are also fond of that memory foam feel and would like to get more of it. The firm version of the mattress is good for stomach and back sleepers, but side sleepers (especially ones that sport a little bit of weight), will feel pressure in the shoulders and the hips.

This problem is slightly solved with the softer version, although tension in key side sleeping areas is still noticeable. If you often have problems with finding the right amount of support for side sleeping, the Tomorrow mattress is not the best solution in your case.

Motion Transfer

The firm version of the Tomorrow mattress is excellent at isolating motion, just like the softer version. However, tests have shown that the plushier Tomorrow mattress is even better in terms of motion transfer compared to its firmer counterpart.

Specs:

  • Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Firmness Rating: 3.5 to 4.5 for the soft version, 6 to 6.5 for the firmer version
  • Mattress Height: 10 inches

Pros

  • CertiPUR-US® certified.
  • Gel-swirl memory foam technology.
  • Cooling memory foam.
  • Two firmness level choices.
  • Compatible with adjustable bases.

Cons

  • Neither mattress firmness option is ideal for side sleepers.

Construction

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora is one of the best luxury hybrid mattresses, because it has many features that stand out compared to the industry standard.  The cover is made with phase-change material, which has a unique property of absorbing body heat up to a certain temperature threshold.

In other words, this mattress offers temperature neutrality and it’s a great option for people who find themselves sleeping too hot.  The memory foam has a copper infusion, which is known for promoting stronger blood flow.

At the core of the mattress, lies an 8 inch layer of encased coils, properly supported by a high-density poly foam base. Every single layer in the construction of this mattress was intelligently thought of, in order to provide comfort, support, great motion isolation, and minimal noise.

Firmness

Since the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora mattress is available three different levels of firmness, it will naturally feel different on each of the mattresses. Since the medium version is their flagship model, let’s take a look at how it performs in terms of firmness.

Since it uses TitanFlex foam in its upper part, the mattress has a quick response to pressure, and has pleasant bounce. Overall, the medium version of the Aurora is rated with 5 out of 10, while the soft and firm versions have ratings of 3, and 5 respectively.

Feel

Those of you that opt for the medium Aurora mattress will immediately tell that it can support back sleepers almost like no other. The foam in the upper layers contours the lumbar region, which the pocketed coils provide all the support needed.

Side sleepers will also feel that the medium version of this mattress cradles their body, and it does such a good job at that, we’re not even sure who needs the softest version of the mattress. This indicates that the Aurora is the best hybrid mattress for side sleepers in this round up.

But what’s even more surprising is how the Aurora can keep the spine aligned when sleeping on the stomach. We rarely come across a mattress that can actually relief pressure in all possible sleeping positions.

Can you even imagine the superior comfort that you feel if you’re combination sleepers? Just picturing us sleeping on the Aurora hybrid mattress King-size is giving us the chills.

Motion Transfer

The construction of the Aurora gives the sleeper 5 inches of different types of memory foam before leading the body to the pocketed coil system. This memory foam combination is perfect for motion isolation, as this is a natural trait of memory foam.

Pros

  • CertiPUR-US® certified.
  • Gel-swirl memory foam technology.
  • Cooling memory foam.
  • Two firmness level choices.
  • Compatible with adjustable bases.

Cons

  • Neither mattress firmness option is ideal for side sleepers.

In the past decade, hybrid mattresses have become very popular, especially amongst people who are not sure which type of mattress to choose.  Hybrid mattresses combine memory foam, latex and innerspring coils, which are all materials that help the sleeper rest comfortably in one way or another.

There is no such thing is the perfect hybrid mattress.  What’s important is for you to figure out what are your sleeping habits, and then plan your mattress purchasing accordingly.  While you might feel overwhelmed with the variety of hybrid mattresses available, it’s always better to have more options to choose from rather than having to limit yourself to just a couple of models.
